What Is GIS ?

This is by far the most asked question of this department. GIS stands for Geographic Information System. A GIS encompasses all hardware and software needed to acquire, maintain, and distribute digital and paper map data. Any object that has a location in the county, be it a road, property line, fire hydrant, etc, can be placed into a GIS along with any attribute data associated with it. The Finney County/Garden City GIS Department, established in 1999, aids other county and city departments in managing resources and planning future projects.

Learning the trade of GIS, I first came into the department as an Intern in March of 2006. After a year in the department I earned the title of  GIS Technician, and now continue my growth along with the department.

The GIS department is located in the basement of the Garden City Administrative Center.

What Can GIS Do For You?

1. Custom Web Map

- This website has multiple map services that allow you to interactively navigate to any portion of the county. If you are a member of the public, click on the "PublicAccess" link above to choose an appropriate map service to suit your needs. If you are a County or City employee, then click the "EmployeeAccess" link above and enter your password.

2. Download Map Image

- If you are looking for a basic map covering all of Garden City, Holcomb, or Finney County then feel free to browse through our collection of pre-made map images by clicking the "MapGallery" link above.

3. Arrange a Design Meeting with GIS

- There are three types of information this department can produce.

-15,000 ft flight height, 2 ft pixel - 2000 aerials only - $15.00/ 4 square miles

**Though walk-ins are always welcome to our department it is advised that a meeting is scheduled to ensure that a GIS employee will be available for assistance.
